Satan can keep a hold on us if we do not surrender all to Christ. If there is a sinful desire that we are still holding on to, then we are his. “Satan finds in human hearts some point where he can gain a foothold; some sinful desire is cherished, by means of which his temptations assert their power.” GC 623.1
When the word of God comes to our hearts, does it fall among thorns, where it is choked by that sinful desire?
“And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.” -Luke 8:7
“Sin, however small it may be esteemed, can be indulged in only at the peril of infinite loss. What we do not overcome, will overcome us and work out our destruction.” SC 32.2
This is why the Lord asks us in the book of Proverbs, “My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.” -Proverbs 23:26
Let us give Him our hearts, so that through His Spirit working in us, we may observe His ways, walking in His commandments.
“But Christ declared of Himself: “The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in Me.” John 14:30. Satan could find nothing in the Son of God that would enable him to gain the victory. He had kept His Father’s commandments, and there was no sin in Him that Satan could use to his advantage. This is the condition in which those must be found who shall stand in the time of trouble.” GC 623.1
If we yield ourselves fully to God, Satan will find nothing in us where he can gain a foothold. We can go on to victory, keeping God’s commandments.
