Gross Darkness

It is time for God’s people to shine, not with our own light, but with the glory of God. “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.” (Isaiah 60:1-3) Beautiful verse, at this time when evil seems to be enveloping the whole earth, God’s people are to be forming Christlike characters, so that His glory can rise upon us and this will cause many that are in darkness to come to the light, Jesus Christ.

Many are in ignorance, and are caught up in secret societies, false religions, “get rich quick” schemes, crime, etc., and these all fall under one umbrella, “the man of sin” (2 Thess. 2:3) If they knew, and understood the word of God regarding the “man of sin”, the papacy, many would “come out” of these systems.

… Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. (Revelation 18:2-5)

What a condition the world has found itself in, does anyone doubt that we are at a point where just about all nations are “in bed” with the “man of sin”? Do we see the issues that are being pushed worldwide? Sodomy being chief among the issues. Do we understand what just happened at the head of the Catholic Church?
What did the prophet see God’s people doing at this time as “darkness covers the earth, and gross darkness the people”?
I saw some, with strong faith and agonizing cries, pleading with God. Their countenances were pale and marked with deep anxiety, expressive of their internal struggle. Firmness and great earnestness was expressed in their countenances; large drops of perspiration fell from their foreheads. Now and then their faces would light up with the marks of God’s approbation, and again the same solemn, earnest, anxious look would settle upon them. – {EW 269.1}
The devil along with his evil angels are like a roaring lion “…seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
Evil angels crowded around, pressing darkness upon them to shut out Jesus from their view, that their eyes might be drawn to the darkness that surrounded them, and thus they be led to distrust God and murmur against Him. Their only safety was in keeping their eyes directed upward. Angels of God had charge over His people, and as the poisonous atmosphere of evil angels was pressed around these anxious ones, the heavenly angels were continually wafting their wings over them to scatter the thick darkness. – {EW 269.2}

“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, (follow the lamb, He is in the Most Holy place) and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”(Luke 21:28) Christ has promised us that He will never leave us nor forsake us (see Hebrews 13:5 and 1 Chronicles 28:20), therefore, let us agonize and plead with the Lord for victory.

As the praying ones continued their earnest cries, at times a ray of light from Jesus came to them, to encourage their hearts and light up their countenances. Some, I saw, did not participate in this work of agonizing and pleading. They seemed indifferent and careless. They were not resisting the darkness around them, and it shut them in like a thick cloud. The angels of God left these and went to the aid of the earnest, praying ones.I saw angels of God hasten to the assistance of all who were struggling with all their power to resist the evil angels and trying to help themselves by calling upon God with perseverance. But His angels left those who made no effort to help themselves, and I lost sight of them. – {EW 270.1}
Oh what sorrow, what eternal loss, if we do not resist (Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7), the darkness that surrounds us. And the darkness is getting darker by the day. “Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.” (Isaiah 1:9)

We should pray as earnestly for the descent of the Holy Spirit as the disciples prayed on the day of Pentecost. If they needed it at that time, we need it more today. Moral darkness, like a funeral pall, covers the earth. All manner of false doctrines, heresies, and satanic deceptions are misleading the minds of men. Without the Spirit and power of God it will be in vain that we labor to present the truth. – {5T 158.1}
